A longboard is basically a surfboard with wheels which are available in a great array of shapes and sizes.

Some of the shapes of boards include:
- The Pintail – Tear-drop shaped and flat.
- Drop-through decks – Middle of the deck is lower than where the trucks are mounted.
- Hybrid longboards - Cutouts to allow the wheels to turn at sharper angles.
- The Cruiser shape – kick-tail on the back.
For riding downhill, longboards have stiff decks with
a wheelbase of approximately 30″. There are also Flexible boards which are intended for lower speed riding.
A longboard can be concave shaped or convex shaped in lengthways and they may also be concave from side to side. Which is better is determined by the type of riding and the rider’s preference. The gradual upward bend of the board from front to back is called the camber. If the bend is down it is referred to as the rocker.
Skateboards are used for riding and performing tricks. A report from a few years ago found that there were 18.5 million skateboarders in the world who were mostly male and mostly under 18 years of age.
Early skate tricks are:
- Riding on only two wheels.
- Spinning only on the back wheels.
- High jumping over a bar and landing on the board again.
- Long jumping from one board to another
Skateboarding parks and skate ramps are being built around the world and kids who don’t get into participating in team sports and shy away from conventional sports such as baseball and basketball are now enjoying the extreme activity of provided by skateboarding.
The proliferation of these new parks and ramps has helped skateboarding evolve into today’s sport where advanced tricks and maneuvers are ever more popular. Some of these long hours of practice to learn. It takes time and dedication.
Skateboards can be very expensive, some up to high three figures. If you are just starting out you should blank out this great stuff and settle for something basic and functional. Don’t pay for stuff you don’t need but make sure you don’t compromise on the quality that you need. You will want something you cn afford especially if you decide skateboarding is not for you and there is a great possibility of ruining the equipent while learning.
Skateboarding can be seen on the streets, in neighborhoods, on TV, in movies and in advertisements, across the nation and around the world. So where is the best place for skateboarding? ANYWHERE. Use your imagination and you can definately skate there.
